Wastewater Resources, Inc. (WRI), based in Scottsdale, Arizona is a manufacturing firm specializing in the areas of water treatment and wastewater re-use. The company was founded in 1988 primarily to develop the application of nanofiltration membranes for the purification of brackish waters commonly found in the Western United States. Pilot work performed in 1988 and 1989 by the University of Arizona Water Resources Center, funded by the John F. Long Foundation, was the basis of early WRI projects to recover potable water from wastewater.

In late 1994 WRI was chosen by Black & Veatch and the City Of Scottsdale Arizona to construct turn key the Advanced Treatment Pilot Complex for the City. The project which was completed in 1995, is the primary pilot unit for the City's fourteen million gallon per day facility scheduled for construction north of the city in 1997. This 75,000 gallon per day pilot unit is in use at the Gainey Ranch treatment complex and will remain operational through the end of the decade.

Since 1988 WRI has designed and installed innovative treatment systems for a variety of applications including the following:

  • Laundry wastewater re-use systems
  • Surface water treatment to meet potable standards
  • Metal plating wastewater recovery
  • Food processing wastewater recovery
  • Cooling tower water demineralization and re-use
  • Municipal effluent treatment to potable standards for ground water recharge or irrigation
  • Ground water softening
  • pH neutralization and/or iron removal systems

WRI has developed a number of proprietary designs using a variety of technologies. In addition to membrane filtration, which includes microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis, WRI systems have included other forms of screening and multimedia filtration, floatation, clarification, carbon assisted biotreatment, and evaporation. WRI has pioneered the successful application of completely automated systems utilizing thin film composite membranes for purifying industrial wastewaters. Its accumulated "hands-on" experience in designing, building, and commissioning successful installations is unparalleled.
